Clinker floor tiles for indoors and outdoors

Floor tiles are one of the most popular floor covers worldwide, and have been for many centuries. The current offer in the Latvian market is very large - why is our offer different? Quite possibly, it is the complex nature of our offer - an option to harmonize colors and textures, both for indoor tiles as well as for exterior tiles, steps of stairs as well as for many minor decoration elements providing the premise with an appearance of a complete design. Ceramic floor tiles produced by the Stroher GmbH factory in Germany are special in many ways. Single series include floor tiles both for indoors as well as floor tiles that are frost resistant and intended for use outdoors.

Stair steps for indoors and outdoors

Each step series is available in various color. The series allow to create a uniform ensemble by creating a design in which colors are harmonized both indoors and outdoors. The range of color, surface structure type and size is very wide. It shall satisfy even the most exquisite of customer requirements. The floor anti-slip properties of tiles produced by Stroher GmbH are safe and suitable for use not only indoors but also outdoors. Snow or presence of water shall not render the surface of the floor tiles slippery as the floor tiles are produced with a range of purposes in mind. The most popular uses include residential premises, hallways and halls. There are also special tiles for industrial premises, swimming pools, terraces and stairs. Anti-slippery indicators for Stroher GmbH floor tiles range from R9 to R13. Also various types are available for the use of floor tiles in public buildings and stores that use ceramic with a highly durable surface which shall not wear, scratch, slip and at the same time it shall not lose its original color in presence of chemically active substances or dirt. Such floor tiles are produced with the use of Hardglaze 2.0 or 3.0 technology.​

Extruded ceramic

The material is a ceramic which aerates because it has capillary cavities - pores - that remove vapor. Germans refer to it as a membrane effect. In the same time, the production technology ensures the mechanical durability of the floor ceramic because capillary walls become very strong after the burning process. These ceramic tiles correspond to the standard DIN EN ISO 10545-12. Extruded floor ceramic is safe against freezing and thawing cycles and the manufacturer guarantees its quality for 25 years. It means that it can be safely used outdoors and indoors - places that are subject to the effect of weather conditions. The manufacturing technology of these floor tiles is more complex and thus the costs are higher. Ceramic may not be extruded because the product is obtaining via pressing. For this reason, unfortunately, it is not possible to produce step sides with the use of extruded ceramic technology. The extrusion technology is used only for middle part of the step and not for the sides. With the use of extruded ceramic technology, the material is pressed out from the manufacturing tool in a form of a band, then cut to the needed size, dried and burnt.

Non-slip floor tiles

Tiles like these may be necessary in many places to prevent potential injuries from tripping on a slipper surface. They are very important in areas where the floor is consistently wet, for example, in pools and saunas. The pool tile series, with thickness of 10 mm are intended for use in these environments. Secuton series of ceramic tiles for pools are currently produced in 9 different colors. These tiles are also used in public and manufacturing sites with high anti-slip safety requirements. Ceramic pool tiles are often used in food processing companies for both wall and floor tiling. The pool tiles themselves come with a very strong surface glazing which is obtained with the use of the special Hardglaze 2.0 technology. Even when using pool tiles with high non-slippery properties in sites with high wear intensity, the tiles will almost show no signs of wear and at the same time they can be easily cleaned, Also in public pools or private recreation facilities, pool ceramic shall excellently fulfill its task regardless of whether the surface is wet or dry.

Industrial ceramic tiles

These tiles are characterized by excellent anti-slippery properties, easy hygiene maintenance, frost resistance and high mechanical durability under heavy wear. Five different tile surface textures are available,all of which prevent slipping and are compliant with all regulatory requirements in the field. The ceramic itself is 10 - 18 mm thick with fifteen different color tones which make Secuton and Stalotec collections a real safety factor in industrial and public spaces ensuring an excellent visual appearance at the same time. Secuton and Stalotec ceramic surface is processed with a special hard glazing technology. This highly resistant glazing is based on highly enriches mineral oxide materials that make the tiles more durable than any other non-slippery surface. Even in places with intensive human and mechanical traffic, it is practically impossible to wear down the tile surface. At the same time, this ceramic is chemically inert and easily washed. In industrial tiles, the anti-slippery properties are characterized by coefficient R. Even for the most simple tiles with a smooth surface, the coefficient R is 10/A. While for industrial tiles with coarse surface, the coefficient is R11/B, while tiles with elevated texture - so called 'stars' - have a coefficient of R12-V4/B. Industrial tiles with surface texture - 'buttons' - have a coefficient of R13-V10/B. While Stalotec tiles with crossed grooving, coefficient R reaches 12-V/C. Such additional elements as various floor skirting, corners, drainage steps with and without grooves are available.


Mosaics have been used since ancient times to decorate both rooms and squares in all sorts of buildings, palaces and temples. Modern tile mosaics are often used to decorate lobbies of hotels and other public spaces. Mosaics and borders are used today also in the private premises. For example, in guest rooms, stair wells, fireplace rooms, bathrooms and others. The tile mosaic selected by the owner shall not only serve as an aesthetic decoration, but also due to its peculiar character, the mosaic often contains an energetic value which relieves stress. In the essence, tile mosaic is created from small geometric figures such as square, triangle, octagon, star, cross, circle etc. of which then the ornament is created. The extruded decorative floor tiles of Stroher GmbH are used to cut mosaic and circle elements are both frost resistant and non-slippery. Tile mosaics and borders thus may be used for squares and terraces. In oder to ensure a matching color combination, floor tiles, stair steps and mosaics themselves are created from one and the same material within the same color ranges.

Apart from the regular tile printing tools, Stroher factory also uses a special tile printer. This printer allows to print any image on a small batch of tiles Often factory artists print their new ideas with these printers in the search for new colors and images for the upcoming tile series, however, the printer also enables creating unique tiles as per the requirements of the customer.

Colour richness and clinker durability

Ancient Florentine step or the modern one with straight edges? The selection is wide and one must consider the plethora of offer colours, mechanical durability of clinker and of course - frost resistance and special anti-slipping properties. As a result, the stairs made of clinker ceramic steps on the exterior of the house or indoors shall be very attractive and great to use. The sets of colour, surface texture and size is harmonised with floor tiles allowing to create a uniform design or to mix it in various colours, creating various surface ornaments. Ceramic of the steps is extruded thus allowing it to remove any water vapour present in itself and the contact surface glued to the foundation. This way, the ceramic attachment is not affected during freezing cycles and the ceramic itself does not stratify.

Step assembly

If the basic approaches of assembling ceramic tiles are known, it is not difficult to perform quality works with clinker stair parts both horizontally and vertically. in order to perform clinker step assembly, one must prepare the materials (horizontal surface and vertical elements), glue for indoor and outdoor works, seam filler, spatula, level gauge and wooden hammer. First of all it is necessary to prepare the surface, on which the steps shall be assembled. Usually, it is concrete shaped steps, house porch both indoors and outdoors. It is necessary consider that the entire surface must be thoroughly cleaned in order to ensure ideal fixation. First of all the flatness, level and size of the yet-to-be-assembled stairs are inspected with a level gauge and a ruler. The assembly process of stair clinker steps is as follows:

Clinker step assembly is done in an ascending manner First of all the vertical parts of the surface are covered with glue which is evened out with a spatula. Here it is important to apply the glue generously so that the foundation and material would be attached to each other solidly.

  1. Frontal part is attached to the applied mixture, the surplus mixture is removed so that the part under the step perfectly matches that of the step.
  2. Then the glue is applied to the horizontal surface so that it does not each the edge of the frontal tile.
  3. Then clinker steps are placed on the mixture so that the side would rest on the base of the steps, while the nose would be placed in a manner that there is is a empty gap between it and the frontal tile.
  4. After the frontal and horizontal surfaces have dried, the seams between the tiles are filled with a filler suitable for the purpose of use - either intended for indoors or outdoors.
  5. When performing works, it is important to observe the distance between tiles - it may not be smaller than 5 - 6 mm. Ideally, one should have a 8 - 10 mm seam in order to the glue to securely hold the clunker steps and frontal elements would not allow any room of movement during use. It is mandatory to fill all cavities with a quality filling material - filler.

During assembly, clinker steps are assembled in a slight slope warranting an effective water removal during rain and snow melting period. It substantially prolongs the service life of the material and the entire steps. 90% of the frontal part is fixated against the horizontal surface.
